Inspired by the Penny

Finding Inspiration in Imagination and Creativity

Shavonda J. Blatch

I wasn't always fascinated by pennies let alone cared much about having them in my possession. I can't even remember the day I gained interest in collecting every penny I laid my eyes on. I noticed every penny was unique and realized like people, every penny has a story. You see, I have a tendency to look beyond what meets the eye but my penny interest I have to say has taken the cake. I never thought that pennies would be a part of my story. I learned that God has the tendency to store value in something that seems worthless. I started to wonder why are there so many discarded pennies in poor neighborhoods. I thought to myself, "I really don't see them in wealthier neighborhoods". And then I began to give notice to the various copper tone complexion simularities that pennies and people of color resembled. Finally, I realized the conditions these pennies were in. Some were burnt, beat, battered and bruised by life. Something many people can relate to, especially in communities of color. One cent may not have any monetary value behind it but the person on it and the history behind it is worth perserving.
